Punjab Bolda – review

The general view about this movie is that it is about social situation and a good message is conveyed, but what it really is another story.

In Punjab Bolda Sarabjit Cheema is the lead protagonist , Gurbaaz, who is a young leader and tackling all the social menaces (especially drug, alcohol, dowry, undue indebtedness) in his village, and also making the people aware through street plays. It talks about social reforms but the end doesn’t justify the buildup of the movie.

Also there were too many bad guys (Rana Jang Bahadur, Harpal Singh, B.N. Sharma, Binuu Dhillon) packed into it, that you can never relate to one, and none of their characters got enough screen time to leave mark. Though thanedar and laala ji had their moments. But I find whenever someone keeps on repeating same dialogue, it seems clichéd and looks like copy of Jaswinder Bhalla. It is my viewpoint that only he can carry that unique lines (main tan bullan naal bhanda akhrot, asin kala coat aiven nai paya) repeatedly and still can make us laugh every time. Other comedians have enough strong performances, that they need not copy this thing to leave mark.

Punjab Bolda

The acting of Cheema is good, and he looks like seasoned actor. His counterparts Karamjit Anmol, Gurchet Chitrakar, Anshu Sawhney & others support him very well. It was nice to see Gurchet Chitrakar into main stream Punjabi Cinema (Who can forget his family 420 series).

Anisha Pooja – lead actress has performed well and has some power packed scenes where she leave impact. Sardar Sohi, Shivendra Mahal and Daljeet Kaur as Gurbaaz’s family has done well.

Some of the songs are good but forgettable after some time. The direction is good, little more strict editing was required.

But major flaw is that not even one plot is made strong enough to build a story. There is a dowry thing, indebtedness, alcohol, drug, love story entwined, going abroad. And some of the situations seem unreal, as to even though growing debt on Gurbaaz’s family, still he makes no effort to improve his family situation but is busy in street plays, nor is he shown anytime working (in fields or any other work). So what kinda message we are giving, “to be a leader without having any career, by abandoning your family). As Gurbaaz never show any concrete steps to tackle any menace, so his efforts seem void.

All in all it is a different movie with totally different and new concept, and kudos to all involved. I wish more movies like these with more strong issues are made.

Rating – 3/5
